Pixel Wheels

Another surprise discovery: Pixel Wheels. I really like top-down racers, and this one has a very sleek and polished presentation, several tracks and cars, bonuses to pick up, great handling and even a split-screen multiplayer mode. Highly recommended and more finished that the version number entails.

C-Dogs SDL 0.6.6 - 0.6.8

More than a year ago since I last mentioned the classic multiplayer shooter C-Dogs! There has been several releases with lots of new stuff. Two new spooky campaigns (though I saw this a bit late for Halloween!), several HUD-improvements, semi-transparency effects, a separate key for throwing grenades (trust me, that is useful) and more. To get a full overview of all new stuff, have a look at the projects news section!

Super Tux Party 0.2

That was fast! It wasn't long since I posted about the very promising party game Super Tux Party, and now another release is out! It's a big release too: A new character is available in the form of inofficial Godot-mascot Godette, all characters have received animations and there are three new mini-games (i must appreciate that one of them is called Kernel Compiling!). There are also improvements to boards as those can now have multiple paths and there are several other improvements all around. I'm really happy to see this make good progress, as it's a rare genre that I really enjoy.

Yorg 0.10

The nice and very polished top-down racer Yorg just received a huge update. There is another finely crafted track bringing the totalt to 7, also bringing another song with it. The game has received a new rear-camera and a refined driving model. Further there are big improvements to network play and the GUI has been improved. If you haven't played this fun game yet you ought to give it a try!

Super Tux Party

If you, like me, are a fan of the Mario Party games you might lament that there is no similar open source game. After all, there is SuperTuxKart that reminds of Mario Kart. You won't have to wait anymore though, as I just found a game called Super Tux Party! It is still at version 0.1, but I very much appreciate that someone is working on this. It already has three playable characters, 2 minigames, 2 reward systems, 1 board, AI opponents and more and I really hope to see more from this in the future!

Yorg - 0.7

A few posts ago I mentioned the excellent racing game Yorg. I also mentioned it would get many new features soon, and soon is now! The latest release, 0.7, brings with it the promised weapons and power-ups along with a new track, a new car and other smaller improvements. The game is really well done and is shaping up to be even better. Personally I can't wait for multiplayer, but even now the game is well worth trying.

Yorg

A while ago I discovered a very interesting and rather unique FOSS game: a classic colorful arcade racer! Sure, SuperTuxKart is there and is great, and it's not alone. But Yorg, a reversive acronym for "Yorg’s an Open Racing Game", feels more like Micro Machines with it's top-down perspective, giving it a completely different gameplay style. The game currently has six cars and three tracks with AI players to race against. In the future power-ups, weapons and multiplayer will be added along with more cars and tracks. It all looks very well made; anyone looking for some arcady action racing should give this a try!

C-Dogs SDL - 0.6.5

Frequent visitors know I like the game C-Dogs SDL. Besides being very fun, development is very quick with many new features to play around with in each release. This is of course also true with 0.6.5, which contains a new campaign, a new character editor as well as some additional weapons, using a new more advanced collision code. Look at the video below for a small example:

Open Party

This is a genre I can always have more games in: Party Games. I have always thought playing together with friends in the same room and the same sofa is infinitely more fun than playing online or over LAN. So it's always nice to see games supporting that type of gameplay. Open Party is such a game! It's a collection of fun mini-games for 2-4 players to compete in. There are seven games this far and there is even gamepad support!

Tank Arena

Tank Arena is an arcade game from 1997 that just got it's source code released, qualifying it for a mention here. :) It's playable against another player on the same computer in either a deathmatch, race, capture the flag or co-op play. There also seems to be a bunch of single-player levels to tackle alone. You can drive tanks, chopper and planes and there are several different ones to use, as well as four different worlds, a complete map editor and joystick support!

A few screens from Tank Arena, showing classic pixel art and splitscreen play!

C-Dogs - 0.6.4

Ever-fun run-and-gunner C-Dogs just got it's new nice walking animations! There is also a new features that lets objects spawn items when destroyed, so now you can get healthpacks by destroying those crates!

Here's the new walking animation in action. Looks fancy!

Chaotic Rage - 1.15

Crazy zombie shooter Chaotic Rage got a new release! This action game with co-op support and local multiplayer has long been on my wishlist for an update as I really liked the concept and game idea. A huge number of new things have happened since the last release. There are lots of graphics updates and new models, new maps, new rendering features such as texture splatting and lightmaps, weapon display in first person mode (you can switch between different viewing modes ingame), weapons can now have attachments and there are many bug fixes and performance improvements.
Updated builds are not yet up, but should be there soon!

This is an old screenshot, imagine this but a lot cooler! :)

Tanks of Freedom - 0.6.2

Tanks of Freedom, the beautiful turn-based pixel strategy game, has seen two new releases since I mentioned it last. There are several improvements to the level editor, it's now possible to look around the map while waiting for opponents in multiplayer mode, there are some graphical and UI improvements and of course some misc bugfixes. Enjoy!

Another beautiful tileset from Tanks of Freedom.

The Bub's Brothers

More blasts from the past, as another game from my childhood makes an open source comeback. The Bub's Brothers is based on Bubble Bobble, a classic little platformer that is really fun to play in two-player mode. The Bub's Brothers takes this to a whole new level offering multiplayer for up to 10 players! Three players can play on the same computer and for more players the game has network support. Compared to the original there is also new levels, a random level generator and a big set of crazy bonuses. Polished 2D graphics are included as well!

Lots of players makes for some rather crazy situations in The Bub's Brothers.

Liero / OpenLieroX

Liero has a special place in my heart. Somehow we had found this game when I was in the early years of school and played it during breaks. While it can best be described as a realtime version of Worms, the chaos that ensued when we turned loading times on weapons to zero is what I associate with it today. :)

Digging tunnels, swinging around with ninja ropes and harnessing the power of all sorts of crazy weapons: simply put, Liero is great fun multiplayer with potential for both tactical matches and screen-filling mayhem. And if you feel the game could use even more options (like the ability to play as other characters than worms), OpenLieroX is an extra-everything version that should keep any multiplayer session going for a long long time. It even has online multiplayer, but personally I'd say this should be played should to shoulder. ;)

Lots of crazy going on in OpenLieroX.

C-Dogs 0.6.3

Classic run-and-gun game C-Dogs has a new release: 0.6.3. There are new character faces and colors together with a new level to play. Lined up for the next version is more character sprite improvements. According to the latest news, one thing being considered is nicer walk-animations. Overall, a lot of things is going on with this fun and rather crazy game that works well on gaming-nights. :)

ChaosEsque Anthology v.95

ChaosEsque Anthology is a crazy mix-up of all sorts of FPS-elements. There are an absurd amount of maps, weapons, vehicles, mutators and other things. Since I mentioned it last time a lot of content has been added. How about piloting a Fokker Eindecker III Monoplane or driving a A7V Sturmpanzerwagen WWI German Tank? There are also buildable Observation Towers, many new weapons - both realistic and futuristic, as well as lots of other assets and functions to play around with. This project certainly seems to have a bit of everything and I am sure some very interesting scenarios can be created with it.

Medieval weapons and scenarios are also a possibility in ChaosEsque Anthology.

Tanks of Freedom - 0.5.1

Tanks of Freedom has got a whole slew of updates since I last mentioned it. This beautiful retro-themed strategy game has, among other things, received gamepad support, online map sharing, new maps, more music, etc, etc. A must-try that can be downloaded here!

Tanks of Freedom has some very awesome pixel art. Even details like the interface is made in beautiful pixel design.

C-Dogs SDL 0.6.2

C-Dogs SDL 0.6.2 was just released. There are some huge optimizations for graphics and original tile-sets and sprites have been restored together with new ones. There are also many improvements for level designers. A really fun game, especially with several players. Here is download and changelog!

Bullets everywhere in this arcade-ish run-and-gun game.

Space Nerds In Space - Everything is awesome!

You might remember me mentioning Space Nerds In Space, a multiplayer starship bridge simulator that is so totally cool for a sci-fi fan like me it is hard to describe how much I want to play it together with a full crew. There is still no numbered release, but the game is fully playable and several missions are available. I just watched the recently added video below and just had to share how awesome it all is.
